PELHAM, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2005) – REX EXtreme, an intervention and tutoring program for grades 6-8, has been recognized for its ability to help struggling readers with a 2006 Teachers’ Choice Award from Learning® magazine. This honor marks the second consecutive year that Benchmark Education Company, a leading provider of literacy products and services for K-8 students and their teachers, has been recognized in Learning magazine’s annual awards program.
From Benchmark’s successful Reading Explorers product line, REX (Reading Explorers) EXtreme is designed to help struggling students in the middle grades and above succeed in the classroom and on high-stakes tests. Building middle-grade students’ fluency, comprehension, writing, word analysis and content area reading skills, REX EXtreme is a complete intervention and tutoring program that can be implemented with teachers, paraprofessionals and community volunteers.
"So much attention has been devoted to emerging literacy that some struggling readers in the 6-8 grade range have fallen through the cracks," said Tom Reycraft, president of Benchmark Education. "That’s why we felt strongly about developing REX EXtreme specifically for middle school and above students. Learning magazine teacher evaluators recognize the value of building real-world reading skills for those middle grade students through our comprehensive, age-appropriate and motivating program."
Of the 438 entries in the 12th Annual Teachers Choice Awards, REX EXtreme was one of 67 winners. The winning products will be featured in the January 2006 issue of Learning Magazine.
Pricing for the complete REX EXtreme intervention and tutoring program starts at $4,525, and includes training with observation and coaching; three tutor sets with 144 lesson plans each; a starting supply of student sets that include materials to make the sessions interactive and fun; four book sets containing 432 books and Readers Theater scripts; and a CD-ROM with reproducibles and assessments. REX EXtreme, along with each of Benchmark’s Reading Explorers programs, qualifies for funding under both Title I and No Child Left Behind, and is being successfully implemented in schools across the country.
